WORLD CONFERENCE AGAINST RACISM

The following are excerpts from a panel on the Death Penalty held at the World Conference Against Racism (WCAR). It includes Njeri Shakur, from the Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement, Orenthal Ross from the MOVE Organization, and a statement from Mumia Abu-Jamal from Death Row. The World Conference Against Racism, held in late summer in Durban, South Africa, hosted 120 countries, and 1400 delegates as well as hundreds of thousands of people from South Africa itself. 100,000 people marched on September 1st in Durban against racism and to demand reparations for the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. The march was called by the Congress of South African Trade Unions, the South African Communist Party and South African non-governmental organizations.
